The teachings on lojong, or mind training, are essential teachings on developing genuine compassion on the path of meditation. Based on the seven points of training of the 10th century Indian teacher, Atisha, these pithy slogans are tools for developing openness and skill in helping others. They are helpful and relevant today as they were 1000 years ago. This class is a compliment to our new curriculum called the Way of Shambhala and is open to everyone. When we become awake to our sense perceptions, we can venture into the world with confidence and a vulnerability that is fearless, gentle, and alive. The 'Warrior in the World' leaves the stuffiness of the cocoon to explore the world with direct perception.
The Sadhana of Mahamudra is an important text composed by the Vidyadhara (Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche) and a turning point in his presentation of the buddhadharma in the West. The Sadhana is generally practiced on the new and full moon days. It is a binding factor for our community because students at all levels of practice can participate and receive a true experience or understanding of the spiritual path. Its essential teaching is that the nature of the practice itself undercuts any ideas of spiritual materialism. The practice consists of meditation and chants (in English), and lasts about an hour. It helps us understand the importance of overcoming obstacles and degraded spiritual practices in our time. Please feel free to join us at the Center for the Sadhana. All are welcome.

Meek is a study of the grounded, humble and gentle beginning stages of a warrior's journey.
“The four dignities” are introduced as a path and a process, which describe a warrior's maturing and widening sphere of benevolent engagement in the world. The training in the dignities allows one to maintain awareness and delight at each stage. Meek is a study of the grounded, humble and gentle beginning stages of a warrior's journey. Here one trains to overcome arrogance—the primary obstacle to learning.

The Four Foundations of Mindfulness are the first phase of Buddhist meditation practice, and are a powerful complement to the Shambhala Training levels. An objective of the program is to bring together the unique mindfulness teachings given by the Vidyadhara, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and the traditional Sutra teachings of the Buddha. This intensive demonstrates the degree of precision that can be applied to meditation practice. Participants experience a range of meditation techniques that emphasize both flexibility and the personal responsibility for "being your own meditation instructor."

Allowing our heart and intuition to open, we can communicate directly with the world.
Connecting with the world, and communicating with it more directly, permits us to experience our heart and the ways we respond to experience. Rather than using those responses as an occasion to re-generate habitual patterns, we can use them as reminders to wake up further. When we allow ourselves to meet the world in this way, without hope and fear, we find resources of steadiness and energy.

The program that Acharya John is offering is still to be determined. His teachings for many years focused on the union of the Buddhist and Shambhala traditions. He has directed all levels of Shambhala Training, several Warrior Assemblies, Sutrayana Seminary, and weekend programs at centers in North and South America, Europe and New Zealand. He completed the first three-year group retreat at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia.
Having a background in organizational development, Richard is also accustomed to working with local leadership groups. Recently retired as Director of the Halifax Shambhala Centre, he now teaches full time, and represents the acharyas on the Sakyong’s Council. He and his wife Liz Richardson reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
